16 packaging concepts 16 TRENDS // FALL 2016 www.PackagingDigest.com Shelf-stable hummus in a cup aims to stir up the category USDA-certified organic hummustir's innovative kit-style packaging from Baruvi Fresh LLC, New York City, offers a new wrinkle in the category for on-the- go anywhere convenience: Shelf stable, flexible pouches of hummus packed inside a large paper cup that are opened and mixed at the time of use. The soft, ready-to-eat hummus is packaged in two foil- laminate retort pouches that are folded and packed inside a large coated paper cup with a tamper-evident- sealed lid. Also packed inside the cup are a packet of dry seasonings, a film-sealed wooden spoon and a business-card size list of instructions that repeats those printed on the cup. The product is available in three varieties, Classic, Mediterranean and Village. "The launch of hummustir is very exciting for the team as it's a culmination of years of research to bring fresh hummus to all," says Alon Kruvi, managing director. "Hummustir is paving the path to a future where there will no longer be a need for unnatural, preserved, refrigerated hummus. It will be mainstream for people to easily make fresh, delicious hummus at home or on the go." Vineet Bokaria, Baruvi's managing director, shares the two key considerations why the packaging was selected. "We selected this container because it allowed the three ingredient pouches to sit comfortably within it, as well as allow consumers to easily make fresh hummus, on demand, in a mini bowl," he says. "The larger exterior of the container also allows for an attractive design to be featured, in addition to highlighting hummustir's key benefits and information." The graphics design was handled by Moosylvania (www.moosylvania.com). "Our design goals were to identify an ergonomic method for consumers to stir the chickpea puree and other ingredients, as well as easily eat out of the container," explains Bokaria. "The packaging is not flat and wide like other hummus brands and is also deliberately not thin and tall, a format that is often difficult to eat from and doesn't stack well on shelves. Our packaging allows consumers to make fresh hummus easily and allows them to enjoy their authentic dip and spread without creating a mess." Hummustir is available in 12-oz portions on Amazon.com where a 3-pack was selling for $14.36 and will soon be available at local grocery stores. Locking blister pack: Tough on kids, but easy on moms An innovative child-resistant packaging design for prenatal vitamins is protecting children from ingesting the iron-containing products while at the same time making it easier for expectant mothers to stay on schedule with their vitamins. The new pharmaceutical packaging, a blister pack with locking mechanism, was developed by a multidisciplinary team led by TherapeuticsMD Inc. Adults can easily overcome the package's CR feature. They simply squeeze and hold the sides of the sleeve, slide out the pill pack and press a capsule through the foil. Graphics printed on the sleeve use text instructions and illustrations to show consumers how to open the package. TherapeuticsMD is the parent company of vitaMedMD LLC and BocaGreenMD Inc.; vitaMedMD is using the new packaging for its vitaPearl brand of prenatal multivitamins, and BocaGreenMD is using it for Prena1 Pearl, a generic prenatal multivitamin. "The new packaging provides an alternative to more traditional paper/foil-backed blisters that are difficult to open," explains Jason Spitz, vp, marketing and corporate communications, TherapeuticsMD. "Due to the iron in many prenatal vitamins, packaging must meet F=1 child-safety packaging requirements. Our new package is child-resistant while making it easier for expectant moms to use. We believe the 30-day single foil blister may also increase patient adherence compared to multiple foil blisters in our old packaging and most competitors' packaging." The graphic design/labeling of the packaging was completed in-house by TherapeuticsMD. The physical design of the carton was conceptualized internally, but created by a contract manufacturer in conjunction with a packaging vendor. "It was truly a team effort to develop and implement," says Spitz. — Kate Bertrand Connolly, contributing writer ALL THE RIGHT RESINS. FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS. A capacity for leadership.
