BIomedevice Boston 2015 Rotary Ball spline A customized SPR 25A-1-458.5/ CU/LB rotary ball spline from NB Corp. of America is being used as a torque-transferring bearing in an orthopedic surgery robot. This hollow-shaft ball spline, equipped with cross rollers rather than balls for a higher load rating, is 485.5 mm long, measures 25 mm in diameter, and features a low-temperature black chrome surface treatment to prevent rusting. In this application, the component controls the vertical movement of the robotic arm as the robot mills the patient's bone. In addition, a nut that rolls on the ball spline shaft imparts rotary as well as linear motion capability to the arm, providing the robot with positioning accuracy.
