emdt.co.uk European Medical Device Technology Spring 2014 | 49 Genetic Assay Reduces Thyroid Removals The U.S. company Veracyte has developed a genetic assay that might reduce thyroid removal surgeries by up to 50%. When doc- tors find a lump in the thy- roid gland, they don't know for certain whether it is caused by cancer. Even after examining a tissue sample with a microscope, clinicians often can't definitively rule out cancer, since the tests remain inconclusive in about 30% cases. As a precaution, doctors usually remove the gland, which necessitates that the patient takes medication for the rest of his life. According to Veracyte, the Afirma Gene Expression Classifier (GEC) accurately distinguishes between thyroid cancer and benign nodules, significantly reduc- ing the need for surgery. The efficacy of the test was shown in a recent study. "These findings are promising, as they suggest that the supplemented Afirma GEC can provide physicians with important information early, which can impact their preoperative work-up and surgical strategy for patients suspected of having an aggressive form of thyroid cancer," says Bonnie Anderson, CEO of Veracyte. Automated Point-of-Care Testing Provides Results in 20 Minutes Recently, Roche acquired the Massachusetts-based company IQuum to expand its footprint in the molecular diagnostics market. The company has developed the lab-in-a-tube system that allows point-of-care testing producing "lab-like results," according to the company. Reportedly, the test is so easy to use that nonspecialized healthcare workers can perform it with minimal training because the device, "automatically executes all the required assay processes, including reagent preparation, nucleic acid purification, amplifica- tion and real-time detection." The first application of the system was an Influenza A/B assay, but the company is working on assays for various infectious diseases. Depending on the assay, the device can provide results in 20 minutes to 1 hour.
