46 | Spring 2014 European Medical Device Technology emdt.co.uk innovation System Provides Real-Time Diagnostics During Endoscopy Researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed an in vivo molecular diagnostic system that is able to diagnose cancer in real time during endoscopic surgery. Currently, the physician conducts biopsies during the intervention and then has to wait for the pathologist's analysis. The fibre-optic probe of the NUS system, in contrast, collects tissue samples that are instantly analyzed by a computer program, accord- ing to a press release. "The immediate point-of-care diagnosis dur- ing live endoscopic examinations will provide benefits in time and cost-savings, and will improve our patients' prognosis as a result of early diagnosis," says Yeoh Khay Guan, one of the researchers. The system has been tested in more than 500 patients in Singapore across diverse cancer types, including stomach, esophagus, colon, rectum, head and neck, and cervix. Magnetic Beads Capture Tumor Markers Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineer- ing and Automation IPA in Mannheim have developed an analyti- cal method to detect the protein markers secreted by tumors in one step. Blood and urine contain numerous substances, which makes it difficult to filter out desired molecules. The researchers have overcome this challenge, however, by using magnetic beads—particles measuring only a few micrometers in size that can be steered with a magnet. The sur- face of the beads is coated with specific antibodies, which capture the desired proteins when they swim past. In order to detect the tumor cells, the research- ers feed additional antibodies with fluorescent markers into the sample, which then attach themselves to the proteins and cause them to light up. When the sample is exposed to a magnetic field, the beads group together, making the resulting cluster visible. The method not only identifies cancer cells, it also reveals signs of infections.
