22 | Spring 2014 European Medical Device Technology emdt.co.uk breakthroughs Learning from Fruit Flies How to Sniff Out Cancer Researchers from the University of Konstanz, Germany and the University La Sapienza in Rome, Italy, have developed a new technique to detect cancer that capi- talizes on the fact that fruit flies are able to smell the difference between cancer cells and healthy cells. The insects not only distinguish healthy and sick cells, they can identify groupings among the different cancer cells through their olfactory sense. Dogs can sniff out cancer, too, but results are not quantifiable and can thus not be used for systematic medical diagnosis. The researchers developed a technique to make the results visible, however. The different odourant molecules of the respec- tive scent samples create different patterns of activated neurons. Because of a genetic modification, the neu- rons fluoresce under the microscope when active. "What really is new and spectacular about this result is the com- bination of objective, specific and quantifi- able laboratory results and the extremely high sensitivity of a living being that cannot be matched by electronic noses or gas chromatography," explains Giovanni Galizia from the University of Konstanz, the head of the group. "The high sensitivity of the natural olfactory receptors, paired with the quickness with which we can generate these test results, might lead to the development of a cheap, fast and highly-efficient prescreening that can detect cancer cells well before we can discover them with the present diagnostic imaging techniques." The results of the research group are published in an article in the international scientific journal, Scientific Report. —T.K.
